Health benefits of Archery…what?
If you asked people about the health benefits of archery, they’d probably look at you like you were crazy.
Yes, there are health benefits of archery; not only physical benefits but mental health benefits as well!
People take up archery for many reasons; they love to shoot and enjoy the friendly competition and socializing with friends.
Maybe it’s something new they’ve been wanting to try. You may not realize it, but you’re benefiting in many different ways.
A few health benefits of archery
- Exercise. You’ll be walking quite a bit, which improves your circulation and builds and tones your leg muscles.
- Socializing. You’ll benefit from socializing with target archery more than bowhunting. There are a lot of great people that shoot and you’ll enjoy meeting and talking with them.
- Gain confidence and build self-esteem. Learning a new skill will boost your confidence and self-esteem. You’ll be amazed how much better you feel.
- Stress relief. Being physical and outdoors enjoying the sunshine with a great group of people, how could it not decrease your stress level?
- Builds upper body strength. Using a bow works the muscles in your chest, arms, back, and shoulders. The more you practice, the more developed these muscles will get. The first few times you shoot, I can promise you that you’ll notice these muscles.
- Improves balance. Balance involves using your core muscles and helps you remain steady while making your shot.
- Enhances mental focus. An archer must tune out any outside distractions and focus on the target. It’s not easy at first, but you’ll get better with practice.
- Food. If you bow hunt, you can put meat in the freezer and provide for your family. Venison is a very lean and healthy meat.
- Family. Bowhunting or 3D archery is something the whole family can learn to do. Plan your family outing around a 3D shoot, you’ll have a blast.
If you’re a woman looking for a new form of exercise, look no further than archery! Not only is archery a fun and exciting sport, but it also offers numerous health benefits for women of all ages.
Let’s consider how you can benefit from it and why it’s the perfect exercise to add to your routine.
With every draw of the bow, we harness our inner strength. As we age, let each arrow remind us that staying active is not just about fitness—it’s about embracing the power and grace we hold as women.
More Health Benefits of Archery
A Full-Body Workout
One of the best things about archery is that it simultaneously works out multiple muscle groups. Pulling back the bowstring works your upper body. Stabilizing your body while you shoot works your core and lower body.
This means you can get a full-body workout in just a few minutes of shooting. Plus, it’s a low-impact exercise, which is excellent for women with joint pain or other issues.
Develops Endurance and Cardiovascular Fitness
Apart from being a full-body workout, archery contributes to endurance and cardiovascular fitness.
Retrieving arrows after each round involves substantial walking, leading to a moderate cardiovascular workout.
This combination of physical exertion and movement contributes to improved heart health.
Enhances Flexibility and Balance
Flexibility
Drawing a bow engages and stretches various muscle groups, including your hands, arms, chest, and shoulders.
Regular archery practice can increase your flexibility and help maintain a good range of motion in your upper body, which is beneficial as you age.
Balance
Archery requires substantial balance to keep your body steady as you aim and shoot.
This constant practice can greatly improve your overall stability, an essential aspect of fitness, particularly for preventing falls and injuries as we age.
Boosts Bone Health
Archery can also boost bone health. The tension created when drawing the bowstring strengthens the arm bones.
The walking aspect of the sport maintains bone density in the lower body.
This is especially beneficial for women at a higher risk of developing osteoporosis.
Improves Mental Health
Archery is also great for improving mental health. It requires focus and concentration, which can help clear your mind and reduce stress.
Plus, the sense of accomplishment you feel when you hit the bullseye is a great mood booster.
Fun and Social Activity
Archery is a great way to socialize and meet new people. Many archery ranges and clubs host events and tournaments where you can meet other archers and have fun.
Plus, it’s a sport enjoyed by people of all ages and skill levels, so you don’t have to worry about feeling out of place.
Contributes to Weight Management
Archery, as part of a balanced fitness regimen and a healthy diet, can help maintain a healthy weight.
Walking, holding the bow, drawing the bow, and concentrating for an extended period can burn a surprising number of calories.
Wrapping Up The Health Benefits of Archery
Archery is a fun, low-impact, full-body exercise perfect for midlife women and beyond.
It offers numerous mental health benefits, is a great way to socialize, and can contribute to weight management.
So, try archery to stay active and healthy. You might hit the bullseye on fitness!
Archery gave me a space to connect with others through 3D competitions.
It helped me to step out of my introverted shell and embrace a more sociable side.
Moreover, archery wielded a powerful impact on my confidence, self-esteem, and overall life perspective, infusing my daily life with positivity.
It’s more than just a sport; it’s a platform for personal growth that allows you to step beyond the familiar, fostering a sense of accomplishment and invigorating your spirit.
Remember, as exhilarating as archery might be, it’s important to ensure you’re medically fit to participate.
Consult your primary care physician before embarking on this adventurous journey.
Prioritizing safety, above all, paves the way for a thrilling and satisfying archery experience.
Is Target Archery & 3D Archery two different kinds of archery? How do you find clubs for these in your area? Thank you sharing your knowledge with us!!!!
I love all your blogs Jill, I find them interesting an very informative. I don’t know much about using a bow but you make it sound fun an something I would try if I were close to a range or even had a bow.
My question is for an amateur like myself, I’ve never done this lol , how much is cost for basic supplies for a beginner who isn’t sure if they would be able to continue this for very long for what ever reason. Is it cost efficient to go with just the lower grade for beginners an wot do I need?
Thank you
I’m ready for some 3D !!! Club in my area ? I would love to hear about your cat stories ❤️
Thanks for the comments, Regina. As luck would have it, there are several 3D Clubs in your area including Ashflat, Salem, Melbourne, Cave City, and Jonesboro, AR. In fact, Ashflat (Razorback Archery) has their 3D competition this coming Saturday 14th. I plan on being there early to avoid a lot of the heat. And, yes, I plan on posting more cat stories in the near future. Thanks again for visiting Words and Camo.
I like how you said that picking up archery works out your chest, back, and shoulders. Actually yesterday, I was reading an article about English longbowman and how much stronger they were then we are now. I’ll have to run to the store and pick up some archery equipment.
I agree with the article you read Michael. I think folks in the old days were stronger than us–they were a lot more physical in their daily lives than we are today. We’re probably wimps compared to them, lol. I’m excited you stopped by and left a comment. Have a great day, Michael.
